QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND
Tūrangawaewae, “a place to stand”. Conceived for a client who wished to create a haven for themselves and a multigenerational retreat for family, three pavilions are set across the land, each echoing the others in form while expressing distinct programmes within. Together they define clear public and private realms, offering connection to others, to the landscape and to one’s inner world. Open courts stitch the pavilions together, allowing spaces to flow seamlessly between indoors and out, where light, shadow and materiality bind the architecture to its place.

Conceived for a young and growing family, the renovation honours the mid-century architecture of the original house without being afraid to adapt it for contemporary living. Positioned at the rear of the home, the living space has a considered focus on natural light, opening out to views that draw the surrounding landscape in. A muted, nostalgic palette reflects the tones of the outdoors, white brick offering a modern interpretation of the masonry traditions of the era. A timber-built window nook introduces warmth and texture, adding depth and layering to the restrained simplicity of the space.

MCMAHONS POINT, NEW SOUTH WALES
Designed as a tranquil retreat for its semi-retired owners, the apartment reflects their style through layered materiality and a colour palette drawn from treasured artworks. The space is open yet carefully balances public and private realms. At its heart, a sculptural staircase announces arrival while providing a quietly functional element for daily life. Feature marble and warm timber are layered throughout, with gentle curves in both fixed and freestanding pieces providing contrast to the home’s sharp geometry. Downstairs, the house offers varied experiences for entertaining, set against a backdrop of panoramic views. Upstairs, a private retreat provides spaces to reflect, work and unwind, where the considered material choices foster a sense of refuge and intimacy.

A thoughtfully crafted design creates a seamless connection between the kitchen, dining and living areas, forming the heart of the home. A balance of minimalist refinement and warm European elegance creates a welcoming environment for both the client and guests, still respecting the home’s architectural heritage. The kitchen can subtly disappear behind bifold doors, quietly transforming the space and concealing everyday clutter and the central island bench provides a natural gathering point. Textured materials in nature’s moody hues bring depth and warmth to a muted palette, layering walnut and black-stained timber, forest-inspired stone, and tobacco-toned leathers with tactile fabrics. Existing natural light is enriched by subtle lighting treatments that create atmosphere throughout the day and evening.

Materiality echoes the tones of the surrounding land, with a hero rammed earth wall anchoring the interior. Natural stone, leather accents, and stainless-steel benchtops provide both durability and tactility, supporting the functional demands of the studio while maintaining a refined aesthetic. Robust yet warm, the palette balances practicality with atmosphere, allowing the studio to function seamlessly as a place for making as well as a space for reflection and inspiration.

SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES
Designed as a sophisticated city residence for a professional couple, this warehouse conversion offers a deliberate contrast to their country family home. Drawing from the surrounding red-brick vernacular and the inherent character of the warehouse shell, the material palette is bold yet cultivated. Expansive white walls provide a canvas for layered colour, pattern and texture, transforming scale into intimacy. Vibrant tones, inspired by the owners’ art collection, soften the industrial framework, while an eclectic mix of design icons and contemporary pieces reflects a life well collected. Together, these elements create a sense of timeless harmony which is both personal and distinctly urban.
